Kgomotso Poopedi is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology at the University of Limpopo.
She is the Principal Investigator within the CODrg (Cancer, Obesity, and Diabetes Research Group). Her research focuses on the role of epigenetic regulation in disease progression and inflammation, particularly in breast cancer among black South African women and obesity-related metabolic dysfunction.
She integrates biomarker discovery with functional cellular models to develop context-relevant diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Her work investigates DNA-based epigenetic biomarkers with prognostic and diagnostic potential in breast cancer, aiming to improve early detection and prediction of metastatic progression. In parallel, she explores medicinal plants as therapeutic agents in obesity-related inflammation, using co-culture models of 3T3-L1 adipocytes and RAW 264.7 macrophages to study macrophage–adipocyte interactions.
She previously served as a standing council member (2022-2024) of SASBMB before her current position as a website and social media representative.
