Fortunate Mokoena is a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, North-West University. She also serves as an Associate and Deputy Programme Coordinator for the National Institute of Computational and Theoretical Sciences (NITheCS), within the Health Focus Area. She is the Principal Investigator of Parasite drug discovery at the North-West University.
Her areas of interest include early-phase drug development for infectious pathogens that cause disease and the design of diagnostic assays. She has training in molecular biology, protein chemistry, and bioinformatics.
She places a strong emphasis on employing structural bioinformatics and next-generation sequencing as essential methods to achieve research goals. Her laboratory at North-West University (parasite drug discovery) is currently working on a multidisciplinary initiative that focuses on Plasmodium falciparum Hsp90 and mode of action studies (target deconvolution) for active compounds against multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.
